The thing is..you must know how to utilize this podcast knowledge in your own podcast for this to work. Not all podcasts are the same, but we can pick some podcast statistics and share how we utilize it in our own podcasts.

Keep in mind these listeners are more than likely listening to the same type of podcasts. If a listener is interested in business 5 of the 6 podcasts maybe business podcasts. If played right you can turn competition into allies. If you have a sports podcast it doesn't mean you can't build relationships with other sport podcasts in order to grow your audience. This concept isn't new. Musicians do this all the time. You can either pay for the collaboration (usually the more popular podcaster is the one receiving payment) or you can do it with hopes of mutually trading viewers. Take advantage of this fact, not many industries are like that.

Look, us as podcasters, have to realize we are in a new era. It's easier to dominate, harder to find advice, and still do this day we our molding this industry. This makes it possible to produce the best podcast in your arena. It gives business a shot at entertaining their audience - which transfer to customers, clients,etc. It gives people and business alike a chance to be heard without worrying about "Big Players". It takes some years for things to change and transition. Netflix and TV. Walmart and Amazon.... and more closely related radio and music streaming (Spotify, iTunes, iHeartRadio, etc.). The first few years digital music had a rough start. Now they are kicking the crap out of traditional radio.
What's the point...The big key take away here is that we are in transition period of radio (including broadcasts and radio talk shows) to those main streaming services. The podcasters who are in this transition period will reap the best benefits..
It's like investing in the internet during the .com bubble. The best time to jump on the podcast industry is yesterday (or before that probably).

If people like comedy, education, and news ask yourself WHY - and then adapt. Let's start by jumping into why people would like comedy, education, and news. I think this follows the trend of entertaining the human being. People are entertained my comedy, people become consumed by learning things they enjoy, and people like news on what matters most to them. I think news is type of education that involves a bit more contemporary and involves more emotion and opinions. Make sure whatever type of podcast you are producing you have focal point around the fact that people like to laugh, people like to learn, and people like to discuss recent events.

What we do know id people who subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and specialty podcasts don not like advertising. In fact they are paying money to a service that has business model that prides itself on no advertising. Does that mean you can't advertise or make money podcasting unless you charge for the podcast? Not at all. It means to be cautious and creative. You can use product placement, keep advertising minimal, and don't be to salesy with sponsors. You want to make your sponsor knows you are doing this in order to cater to your audience.
